Dr. Auffermann was born in Germany, where he attended high school until graduation.He studied medicine at the universities of Münster, Bochum, Dusseldorf and Aachen and was a resident at the University of Cologne and at the Technical University of Aachen. This was followed by fellowships in the Netherlands (University of Leiden) and the United States (University of California San Francisco).
